The Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen will present Harmony: Philippines-China Friendship in Love Songs and Lullabies.  This unique online event will see Philippine Consul General to Xiamen Maria Antonina Mendoza-Oblena as pianist collaborating with world-class Chinese violist Jing Yang in an afternoon of music and candid conversation celebrating the friendship between the Philippines and China.

Fujian Province, where Xiamen is located, is the hometown of the majority of the Filipino-Chinese and their ancestors in the Philippines, including Philippine national hero Jose Rizal, and three past Philippine presidents. Thus, because of their long and deep history, the  peoples of the Philippines and China share a lot of common values, culture and traits including family, friendship, music and love.

This online event will merge all these features in perfect Harmony as Consul General Oblena and Miss Yang perform Filipino, Chinese as well as western classical music.

Ms Yang is considered one of the three (3) most famous musicians from Gulangyu Island.  She played at the 41st Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to celebrate the inscription of Gulangyu as a World Cultural Heritage site.  She also won first prize at the Althur Bliss Works Competition in England, second prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition in Austria and third prize at the Bled Viola International Competition in Slovenia. She won the prize for “Best Interpretation of a Contemporary Work” at the International Bodensee Music Competition.

Consul General Oblena finished two Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education and Piano (both cum laude) at the Conservatory of Music of the University of Santo Tomas (1992 and 1993, respectively).

Harmony is part of the celebrations of the Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen of the 124th Anniversary of Philippine Independence. It will be featured online on Saturday, 18 June 2022 via Zoom.
