The Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen hosted a welcome lunch for Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel and representatives from the PDP Laban Party in Xiamen on 10 June 2017 including Parañaque Congressman Gustavo Tambunting. Prominent members of the Filipino Community in Xiamen were also invited including Mr. Benito Choa of Eton Group, Engr. Roman Go of Manila-Xiamen International School (MXIS), Ms. Johanna Rivera of SM-Xiamen and representatives of Filipino organizations in Xiamen and Quanzhou cities.

In his brief remarks, Consul General Flores welcomed the delegation to Xiamen and Fujian province – highlighting Fujian as the origin of the majority of overseas Chinese in the Philippines and where tea culture developed and thrived which eventually received global acceptance as a health drink.

The Senate President and the members of the delegation stopped over Xiamen on their way to Fuzhou, Fujian province, to attend the BRICS' (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) Political Parties, Think-tanks and Civil Society Organizations Forum on 10-11 June 2017. The Senate President visited Fujian upon the invitation of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC), the China Council for BRICS Think-tank Cooperation (CCBTC) and the China NGO Network for International Exchanges (CNIE) who hosted the BRICS Forum.

The highlight of their return trip to Xiamen was the meeting with Xiamen City senior officials and banquet hosted by the CPC Xiamen Municipal Committee led by Mr. Pei Jinjiang, member of Standing Committee CPC Fujian Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Xiamen Municipal Committee. Mr. Pei briefed the Philippine delegation of Xiamen’s achievements and ongoing development projects. Senate President Pimentel responded with his word of thanks for the warm hospitality and friendship extended to the Philippine delegation and underscored that Xiamen provides a model for urban development to its Philippine counterparts. He also extended an invitation for Mr. Pei and CPC members to visit the Philippines soon.
