Consul General Julius Caesar A. Flores attended the 1st Tang Xianzu International Drama Festival and 2nd International Forum for Cultural Inheritance and Innovation in Fuzhou City, Jiangxi province from 24 – 26 September 2017. Counterparts from the Singaporean and Thai Consulates General also participated.
The Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Jiangxi Provincial Government invited the Consulate General to participate in said events as part of its program entitled “Viewing Jiangxi (Fuzhou City) from the Eyes of Foreign Diplomats in China” which aimed to promote the development of cultural tourism and deepen mutual understanding with the diplomatic/consular corps and other partners.
The Drama Festival is a tribute to acclaimed Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu (1550-1616) who is William Shakespeare’s contemporary and celebrated under the auspices of Sino-British diplomatic relations. It is a month-long event which runs through the end of October showcasing plays from both playwrights
The following are the highlights of the activities:
- Day 1/24 Sep 2017 - Visit to Fuzhou High-tech Zone Exhibition Hall
A tour of Jiangxi’s Fuzhou High-tech Zone Exhibition Hall was undertaken which showcased the development and accomplishments of high-tech industries based in Jiangxi Province featuring high-tech innovations in automobiles, pharmaceuticals, real estate developments, textiles, beverages, robotics and construction materials.
- Delegations Meeting and Dinner Reception Hosted by the Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government
The officials of the Provincial People’s Government of Jiangxi led by Mr. Yao Zengke, Vice Secretary of the CPC Jiangxi Provincial Committee warmly welcomed the delegations from different countries during the courtesy call and meeting at Rushui Forest Hotel, led by the Angolan Ambassador from Beijing.
- Opening Ceremony of the Tang Xianzu Drama Festival & International Drama Exchange Month
The Provincial People’s Government of Jiangxi welcomed the guests and participants with a festive Opening Ceremony with hundreds of local students as well as guest foreign performers entertaining the huge audience with a program of songs and dances from around the world.
- Day 2/25 Sep 2017 – Opening Ceremony of the 2nd International Forum of Cultural Inheritance and Innovation
The 2nd International Forum for Cultural Inheritance and Innovation was held at the Grand Honor Hotel, Fuzhou City, Jiangxi under the auspices of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), Jiangxi People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (JXPAFFC) and the Fuzhou Municipal People’s Government. The whole-day Forum highlighted presentations from theater and cultural groups and academic institutions from all over the world including UK, Spain, Albania, USA, South Africa and Russia, among others.
- Visit to Fuzhou No. 1 Middle School
The Xiamen Consular corps led by Consul General Flores was warmly welcomed by the school administration officials and students during the visit. It is a well renowned high school established in 1901, and being one of the first batches of key schools in Jiangxi province to be named as “National Advance Unit Teaching and Education”. The delegation was given a tour of the expansive school grounds with its own track and field and park and later treated to various cultural performances from the students.
- “The Peony Pavilion”, Performed at Tang Xianzu Grand Theatre
A recent adaptation of the drama opera, The “Peony Pavilion”, a play written by Tang Xianzu in the Ming Dynasty, was performed at the Tang Xianzu Grand Theatre which served as the main highlight of the month-long festival. The lively songs and authentic costumes brought to life this mini classic opera which endeared itself to the audience.
- Day 3/26 Sep 2017 – Tour of the Zhuqiao Ancient Village, Jinxi, Jiangxi Province
The last activity was a tour of the Zhuqiao Ancient Village located in Jinxi. Zhuqiao is a typical Chinese settlement where the Ming and Qing architectural complexes are well preserved with 109 heritage houses. The Zhuqiao Ancient Village is surrounded by gatehouses and dotted with ancient wells, the latter built in 1742 and 1856 to provide irrigation for the surrounding farmlands.
